Because Good DICT is Always a Great Gift!
It’s a simple idea: words would be a lot more fun (and make more sense) if they meant what they sound like? If:
Canonize meant what spicy food does to your colon?
Faux pas meant fake peace?
Rebuff meant to get undressed?
Well, they do in my book, Dict Jokes: Alternate Definitions for Words You've Probably Never Heard of But Will Definitely Never Forget.
As a kid, whenever I came across a word I didn’t know my parents made me to look it up. You too? And by look it up I mean I had to physically get up, haul the dictionary down off the shelf, and search for the word. To avoid that I tried to define the word by how it sounded. Sometimes it worked. Most times it didn’t. But I almost always liked my alternate definition better. I mean c’mon, why doesn’t “grammatology” mean ‘the study of grandmothers?’
I began sharing my alternate definitions on social media back in 2011 as Leighann Lord’s Word of the Day (WOTD) and I was delighted by how much people enjoyed them. They said:
“I share this with my students.”
“You make me want to read more.”
“Hey, I used one of your words today.”
This inspired my inner teacher and outer comedian to write Dict Jokes. Dict is short for “dictionary”.
It was my first book. Volumes one and two (yes, there are two) are available on Amazon. I usually sell volume one at my live shows, but now you can order your autographed copy from me for the holidays. Order now, until December 18, you’ll get a free gift: The Very Funny Lady’s Quick Reference Guide On How To Live A Stress-Free, Happy Life.
