![]() Last weekend, I had the absolute pleasure of emceeing the Northeast Conference on Science and Skepticism. This was my second time at bat, and it hits my wheelhouse, areas of expertise, and wonder in all kinds of satisfying ways. On the last day of the conference, they gifted me with a plant: an orchid. I was grateful and yet nervous. I don’t come from a greenthumb family. My Mother somehow managed to kill a cactus; not out of malice. The official story is: it just happened. And so, I don’t have a nature/nurture level of experience to draw on, on how to keep a plant-based, organic lifeform alive. But when I got home today, I found that the last closed bud on my Precious Orchid had opened. And she is BEAUTIFUL! Not just that bud, but the entire plant! And yes, I think of her as a she. (I leave the possibility open that My Precious Orchid is gender nonconforming.) Either way: I. Am. In. Love. I whisper sweet everythings to her daily and it is a pleasure to see her in the morning and in the evening when I come home. Joy. I have not yet named her. Perhaps, Michael Burnam? Thank you, NECSS.
