I stepped on-stage to do standup comedy for the first time on March 31, 1992. It changed my life. I’ve felt the rush of a standing ovation and crush of seething disdain; the latter making me want to go home and start filling out law school applications. But I’ve also been humbled by that audience member who has sought me out after a show to hug me, shake my hand, look me in the eye, and tell me they’ve just lost their job or a loved one, and more than anything in the world they needed to laugh and I helped them do that. It is no small thing to know that pursuing my joy in life has sometimes brought joy to others.
I’ve written a book essays, a memoir about my professional and personal journey through life on and off stage called Real Women Do it Standing Up: Stories From the Career of a Very Funny Lady.
